Hvar, Croatia

A holiday should be a departure from the grind of everyday life to a place of beauty and creative stimulus, a time to relax and rejuvenate your normal life. But in the case of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld — born and raised in the city of lights and surrounded by the world’s finest art, fashion, and food, breathing in the very air of romance, glamour, beauty, and sophistication — what constitutes a holiday getaway?

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld can go virtually anywhere she wants in the world and her favorite spot to escape is Hvar, Croatia. Julia's gorgeous boyfriend Robert Konjic just happens to hail from Croatia and she has come to adore not only Robie but his homeland, feeling quite comfortable on holiday there. Hvar is the crown jewel of the Dalmatian Islands. The weather is always picture perfect and the beaches, where Julia likes to spend much of her time, are pristine rock-pebbled wonders situated along freshwater turquoise bays surrounded by pine forests. Paradise!

Since Hvar is separated from the mainland of Croatia, the enticement of privacy attracts other beautiful and well-known celebrities from around the world. It is a spot where you can truly connect with nature. Ancient olive trees, fields of lavender, robust vineyards, and of course fresh fish and seafood make up the staples in this Mediterranean nirvana. After a long day on the pebbled beaches with Robert, Mademoiselle Restoin-Roitfeld loves a bit of wine along with her favorite Croatian dish of Lobster Spaghetti made with the freshest tomatoes. While booking your plane fare and packing your bag, whet your palate for your journey to Hvar with Julia's favorite Croatian recipe. Sretan Putovanja! This really is the perfect holiday...

Lobster Spaghetti With Fresh Tomatoes

Time: 45 minutes

½ cup fruity extra virgin olive oil

2 large cloves garlic, sliced thin

2 ½ pounds ripe tomatoes, peeled and very finely chopped

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

4 one-pound lobsters, cooked and shelled, or ¾ pound cooked lobster meat

3 tablespoons finely slivered fresh basil, plus sprigs for garnish
1 pound spaghetti alla chitarra or spaghettini

Red chili flakes

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a 5 quart sauté pan or a wide saucepan. Add garlic, cook over low heat until it softens, then add tomatoes. Bring to a simmer and cook 3 minutes over medium heat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil for spaghetti.
  3. Dice lobster meat. Place 1 tablespoon oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Add lobster and cook until just warmed through. Fold in half of the basil. Cover and set aside.
  4. When water boils, add pasta and cook until barely al dente. Drain and place in pan with tomatoes. Stir in remaining oil. Cook, stirring gently over low heat, about 5 minutes, until pasta and tomatoes are warmed and well incorporated. Season to taste with salt and pepper; fold in remaining basil.
  5. Transfer to 6 shallow soup plates. Top each portion with lobster, garnish with basil sprigs and serve, with red chili flakes on the side.

Yields: 6 servings – Invite your traveling companions!

Lancôme Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate

Lancôme chose Julia Restoin-Roitfeld as the face for Ultra Lavande, their current makeup collection. While working with Lancôme, Julia developed a fondness for a few of their other products, including the Génifique line: "I love Génifique Soin and actually the entire Génifique range. I mean, I was lucky when I started, as they gave me a whole bag of products which got me completely addicted... I’m obsessed with Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate. Now that I’m 30, I’m more conscious about using anti-aging products. The company gave it to me in a goody bag and ever since I tried it, I’m addicted. You don’t feel it on your skin, but it works wonders." Julia also convinced her boyfriend Robert Konjic to use Génifique to keep his handsome skin in top modeling condition.

According to Lancôme's description of the product, Génifique is a miracle in a bottle: "Our first skincare that boosts the activity of genes and stimulates the production of youth proteins. A true skincare innovation with 7 worldwide patents pending, Génifique is the foundation of every woman’s skincare at any age or for any skin concern... Visibly younger skin in just 7 days. Skin looks as if lit from within — breathtaking radiant. Its youthful quality returns: cushiony soft and velvety to the touch. Drop by drop, skin is vibrant with youth, its tone becomes astonishingly even, its texture dramatically refined." Clearly Génifique has some powerful benefit if Julia refers to it as her "best friend"...

La Piscine

When asked about her style influences, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld replied, "Now that I am a bit older, I am also inspired by Romy Schneider for a more grown up look. She was pure elegance and sensuality. Have you seen the movie La Piscine (Swimming Pool), with her and Alain Delon? If not, see it and you will get what I am trying to explain!" Made in 1969 by Jacques Deray, the tension of La Piscine unfolds on the grounds of a villa just outside of St. Tropez during a hot August holiday. The film itself is a bizarre play on love triangles with the swimming pool providing the setting for both intense pleasure and enormous destruction though I do not want to spoil the ending for you. The soundtrack for La Piscine was composed by Michel Legrand and perfectly accompanies the film's erotic conflict. Romy Schneider exudes chic sensual confidence throughout the film, I can see why she inspires Julia; the dance at the party by Jane Birkin is also worth seeing.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld is a stunner whose glow seems to emanate from within. It is only natural to wonder what could be in her beauty arsenal that imparts such incandescence. What do you know, it turns out that Julia credits much of her luminosity to Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Radiant Touch Concealer. Ah yes, YSL Touche Éclat — who hasn’t heard of this cult favorite? Fashion magazine editors are fond of raving all about the wonders of this magic wand that supposedly transforms the tired look that comes from jet-setting around the globe and attending one too many glamorous cocktail parties. Just whip out your golden wand that is Touche Éclat, they gush, and voilà, a radiant, youthful glow is imparted. À la Julia. I had to get my little hands on this magic wand to test it for myself, so off to Sephora I ran. I have dark circles too, but not from jet-setting. Mine are the working-mama-hustling-her booty-off variety. I suspect that I might be one-upping Julia in the dark-circle department, but I am nonetheless hopeful about Touche Éclat’s magical properties.

Once home, I dutifully applied Touche Éclat according to the tiny instruction manual that comes inside the box. I swiped the wand under my eyes, in the corners of my nose, in the smile lines under my nose and what the heck, I even put it under my bottom lip. (I still don’t understand why under the bottom lip is such a crucial area for highlighter.) I peered into the mirror. Okay, so where is my glow? I’m supposed to glow like Julia. One new Touche Éclat is sold every 10 seconds. At $39 a pop, this is an impressive sell through. Quite impressive, I say, because that is the perfect example of the power of marketing in the cosmetics industry. And then the realization came, the reality struck home. Julia is 30 years old. And drinks freshly squeezed juice every day. I am sticking to my tried and true, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector for highlighting and Becca Stick Foundation for concealing. Mama’s getting her glow back.

Ashley Javier

Have you ever wondered how Julia Restoin-Roitfeld keeps her luscious locks so healthy and shiny? One reason for her gorgeous hair is her healthy diet including daily juice; another is hairstylist Ashley Javier, the man that starlets refer to as their secret weapon. Perhaps Javier stands out in the sea of thousands of competitors due to his unique hair philosophy: he recognizes that each client has distinct needs and cuts or colors each head of hair in a way that is not only stylish but flattering.

Moreover, the celebrity hairstylist isn’t afraid to admit that quality hair care products are key to his success. Javier swears by the Kerastase line and Julia apparently heeds his wisdom, as she lists a few Kerastase products among her favorites including Bain Apres-Soleil Shampoo, Bain Apres-Soleil Conditioner, and Soleil Micro Voile Protecteur. One of Javier’s favorite treatments is the Nutritive Masquintense, which is available in two formulas for both fine and thick hair: this particular conditioning masque reportedly improves the condition of your hair after the very first application.

Ready to book an appointment with Ashley Javier? His web site is still under construction, but if you are not far from New York, drop by the salon and book an appointment in person. The parlor is chicly located at 250 Fifth Avenue. If you cannot make it to NYC, don’t despair: for a bit of Julia's hair goodness at home, try the incredible Kerastase products recommended by Javier. Thankfully Kerastase can be shipped all over the world! Word on the street says these products will completely transform your hair, making it healthy and vibrant — a true showstopper.

Finally, Javier offers quick and easy tips that anyone can indulge in for more beautiful, glossier hair. Firstly, be sure to use a deep conditioner on the tips of your hair, as the latter show signs of damage sooner than your roots. Also, Javier stresses the importance of maintenance, indicating that using a clear gloss will make your hair look fabulous. Great tips from a talented hairdresser! Now you can share in Julia's secret to shiny hair.
