Vogue Paris May 2010: Penélope Cruz

Carine Roitfeld celebrates the spirit of the month of Cannes with the star studded May issue of Vogue Paris. For this truly special edition, Carine has pulled out all the stops: Penélope Cruz is the guest editor for the issue with three different celebrity covers.
The first cover of the three May Vogue Paris covers features Cruz, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet; the second cover is graced by Cruz and Streep; and the third is devoted to Cruz and Bono. All three covers were photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Packaged with the issue is a special backstage DVD of Daria Werbowy's beauty editorial with Aaron De May as shot by Ben Hasset [Editor's note: the bonus gifts are typically for subscribers only as I understand].
Compelling editorials include "Paradis En Chine" styled by Roitfeld, shot by Karl Lagerfeld, and starring of course Mrs. Johnny Depp or Vanessa Paradis; "La Décadanse" also by Carine, with Daria Werbowy and Francesco Vezzoli modeling and Mario Testino shooting; "Plage Privée" styled by Emmanuelle Alt featuring Natasha Poly captured by Mario Sorrenti; and perhaps most of all—"Erotica" in which La Roitfeld styles her son's former lover Lily Donaldson as captured on film by Steven Klein. I give this issue a standing ovation.

I like the Vogue cover #1 the best, the one with all the ladies!
Yes, I think all the ladies is best also. The whole concept is very cool and a nice way to focus attention on Cannes.
Stunning Cover
Kisses
I just Love Penélope and Meryl!
I do not like this one bit. It looks like trashy fashion american magazines like In Style. Let movie magazines celebrate Cannes. And what the hell is Bono doing there? He is not an actor. I don't get it. That man is irritating.
Glad you like, Cool Life! Thank you for stopping by.
Kisses,
Kellina
Don't they make a pretty contrast, LadyLindy?
I fear I must disagree, Milo, trashy American fashion magazines such as InStyle wish they looked this good. I applaud Vogue Paris for almost always using models and not celebrities unlike many others including its sister publication in the US. I believe that in this particular instance three elements make this a solid choice: Carine's commitment to the festival, the actors and musicians selected, and the uniting factor that they are using this forum to help fight AIDS. Notice they are all wearing (RED)? That's also why they invited Bono to the party, he is currently the spokesperson...
BTW, if you read Bono's personal history and realize that he formed U2 in order to deal with the unimaginable pain of his mother dying the day of his grandfather's funeral perhaps you can find him more human and less irritating.
My two favourite actresses on my favourite magazine = a very happy Milla! Both stunning women. Will be buying my copy this weekend!
Do not like Bono's music, but have nothing but respect for the work he has done for those less fortunate. You just have to respect people who do good things for others when they really don't need to. He could just be sitting in his Irish castle living the life of a rockstar, but nope, he's out there spreading the word and using his influence to try and help others.
Naomi Watts looks like Pamela Anderson, and that's not a look Milla is down with!
LMAO, Milla, you are sooo right! Your last statement, LOL, so eloquent. Thanks for the back up re: Bono, respect. Must be nice to saunter down the boulevard to the nearest Parisian café right now, picking up a copy of VP along the way... Happy spring!
; )
i don't think it looks trashy...but it looks like an american cover.
and let the films celebrate cannes...(and film or movie magazines...)
Awww, if jane! Carine took a risk for a worthy cause and you do not approve?
; )
Which of the films appeal to you that are up at Cannes this year?
brain surgeons and firemen take risks...
of course it is a worthy cause, but cover wise..it's not that great nor original.
if we are are just speaking about the cover.
i don't know which films are in the festival. ;)
I think the image with Bono and Cruz looks cool, it has a surreal aspect where the male and female blend that is almost like the feeling of a Picasso portrait.
For your review I submit the Cannes selection for 2010...
; D
kel you're swell. ;)
no i am actually just a little underwelmed...carine is usually on...and especially because her father was a film producer...i expected a bit more...
but hey...maybe i am being a little harsh...remember the paris hilton cover??
sorry typo...i mean: underwhelmed
if jane, i hear you, you want something more, something original, not just celebrities in black and white wearing (red). what would you have done with the cover (and would you do three)?
good question...i am not a magazine editor but a mere reader...i have no idea.
but i guess it doesn't appeal to my aesthetics but other people like it here so...
It'll be a historical edition! I want so much an exemplar. The actresses in the cover are prettiest and examples for women. When I saw Meryl Streep I remembered the movie Julie & Julia, did you watch? A scene very interesting is when Julia finds after many years one old friend, who only knew through the letters that they changed. Beijos www.liemalgumlugar.blogspot.com
Oh la la Magnifique!!!! I love your blog

It will be, Sil! I have not seen Julie & Julia yet, but I appreciate your recommendation and I will add it to my list of films to watch.
beijos!

Merci beaucoup, Audrwey! I really appreciate you visiting me and I hope you will be back soon.
I second that recommendation - Julie & Julia is a really good film, and Meryl is fantastic. I also recommend 'Broken Embraces', which I believe was tragically renamed 'Broken hugs' in America. Penelope is fantastic!
Have been to 4 different stores and no May Vogue yet. My patience is wearing thin...
oh and re: this cover from fashionologie...

Good to know, Milla! I will add both to my list. As for the May issue of Vogue Paris, I have no idea what the schedule for distribution is there, but here it is never available until after the 1st... Hang in there, it is a beauty...
if jane, thanks for the article from fashionologie. it is never possible to please all of the people all of the time.
personally i think it is nice that carine uses the powerful forum of the cover of vp to promote this cause at this time, clearly she has not lost her mind and decided to do only celebrity covers.
; )
milla, numéro de mai 2010 en kiosque le 23 avril.
Merci beaucoup Kellina, j'attends (impatiemment)...
Mon plaisir, Milla. Bientôt...
They do Kellina!
Penélope is such a Mediterranean beauty, dark colors, young...
Meryl is a beautiful lady with northern colors (blond hair, blue eyes...).
They look wonderful together!
Oui, LadyLindy, the natural coloring of the two women works beautifully together. Another nice contrast at play here is the smooth skin of Penélope versus the textured clothing of Meryl.
Let's not overlook the fact that Carine superbly conveys the concept of ageless beauty with this trio of covers. Here are the ages of those pictured:
61 Meryl Streep
50 Julianne Moore
50 Bono
42 Naomi Watts
38 Gywneth Paltrow
36 Penélope Cruz
35 Kate Winslet
Totally agree! Just a question: where are you from? France?
Pardon! Je suis trop curieuse *^_^*
pas problème! you don't want to email me?
