Mario Testino

Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld has recently ventured into arranging exhibits for photographers. Given his family's extensive connections in the world of art and fashion, this seems like a natural interest for Vladimir. Among other influences, his godfather is none other than Mario Testino, one of the most esteemed fashion photographers currently shooting. As Vladimir relates, “Mario is practically part of the family; he used to pick me up from school when I was younger and take me to fashion shoots. I think that maybe by spending so much time with him that maybe I have a certain eye or an instinct for photography.” Testino was born in Peru and originally intended to study economics, law, and international relations before being bitten by the photography bug. If you are interested in learning more about his work, I recommend Mario Testino Portraits.

Jacques Roitfeld

When queried by BlackBook as to his favorite New York City restaurants, Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld had a great answer: The Russian Tea Room. "I love the Russian atmosphere, it reminds me of my grandfather," he reminisces fondly. His grandfather was Jacques Roitfeld, perhaps better known as Carine Roitfeld's father. Jacques was a Russian film producer and worked in Berlin until moving to Paris and meeting her mother. In Carine's Wikipedia entry, she describes her father as her "idol," and says that "he was always away, filming, at Cannes." She still drinks strong black tea with a bit of jam under the tongue to sweeten it, too, so clearly her father's heritage was influential. Carine showed the photo above of Vladimir with his grandfather during her recent CNN interview. (If you know the third man in the photo, please let me know.) Vladimir, by the looks of things, tea at your grandfather's house must have been amazing.
