Carine Roitfeld: As You Like It

Carine Roitfeld styled this editorial titled "As You Like It" for the February 2000 issue of Vogue US and I don't like it, I love it. Kate Moss models, Mario Testino shoots, and the clothes — ooooo la la ! In this editorial, La Roitfeld takes various pieces of couture and mixes it up to achieve two looks for each, one runway and one reality, both are sheer delights. Among other visual lessons, she teaches us how to wear scorching peony from head to toe, how to pair extravagant pieces like the Hussein Chalayan skirt with understated basics for more wear, and how to dress for space age equestrienne events.

Sorry kellina I like it but I don't love it.
Something that stands out is that the shots don't seem that dated... even though the clothes aren't exactly classic. It's like the Runway vs the Real way guide to wearing pieces. I really like the "Real way" versions though I can picture Carine herself wearing those outself.
Plus Moss looks so different. I love that hair colour!
Whoa, Tanya! It's like you read my mind with those insights...
It is indeed remarkable that this ten year old editorial still looks so relevant, I think partly because the very nature of the pieces is a timelessness that transcends cliché. It also occurred to me that Carine was basically outfitting herself with her selections.
As for Kate's hair! Love love love. I vaguely remember her as brunette and I think it is most becoming. I admire the way that Carine used her teased updo to represent runway and her casual coiffure for real life, she has such a knack for ensuring that every visual detail adds to the whole image.
I dunno, Kellina...I love Kate Moss & Carine Roitfeld and everything....but I'm not loving the clothes! Moss can make a burlap sack look good, so of course she looks amazing. But, as a strictly editorial piece--yeah then I like it. Just don't make me wear that aweful jacket!! Ha ha!
Awww, Kate, I can't see myself actually wearing many of the pieces but I can appreciate that Carine makes each one into both pop art in one frame and then something you can kinda sorta picture yourself wearing in the next. I think it is an unusually pretty editorial and I would love to give that Yohji outfit a try.
; )
Come on... in that first picture she looks like she has some kind of weird neck brace on ;)
Mike—be quiet and watch the game!
