Carine Roitfeld: 7 Cardinal Scenes

When I read the artist statement by Rebecca Dayan yesterday I was reminded of the piece “7 Cardinal Scenes” from the Vogue Hommes International Spring/Summer 2008 issue under the direction of Carine Roitfeld. Asked to submit an inspiring erotic image, the seven subjects happily complied. The editorial opens as follows: “It is a well-known fact that erotic images chanced upon whilst flicking through a magazine or visiting an exhibition sometimes become ingrained on their beholders’ minds and imaginations. In a ‘Vogue Homes International’ exclusive, seven stars reveal the powerful visions that stoked and fired their libidos.”

TERRY RICHARDSON

“I had this poster over my bed, in California, when I was ten years old. Every morning I’d open my eyes to this vision of Farrah Fawcett. Her hair, her smile, the colors on the cover pulled taut behind her. It looked like an ice cream ad. I also remember vividly that you could see her breasts through her t-shirt… this image made a lasting impression on me.”

DENNIS HOPPER

The Postman Always Rings Twice, the sex scene on the kitchen table, with Jack Nicholson, and Jessica Lange in beige stocking and garters. Unforgettable.”

ED RUSCHA

“I see the mechanical world as a source of eroticism. An example would certainly be a shiny piston in a cylinder. I go for this photograph taken by Bettina Hubby. The subject has all the mechanics necessary to be considered erotic. But the dilemma should be which do you attend to first?”

JEFF KOONS

“Looking at The Origin of the World, there’s a sense of birth and desire at the same time, an awareness of your own mortality. It is the alpha and the omega.”

HANIF KUREISHI

“Picasso’s Bathers is erotic not because of its overt sexual nature, but because of its abandonment, the amount of enjoyment he suggests the women are having, and, of course, because of the pleasure Picasso himself — and the viewer with him — is taking in looking at these women.”

GUS VAN SANT

“Hippolyte Flandrin’s Figure d’Etude is an early erotic image for me. I saw it in a book in high school. There have been many others like it and in ‘Paranoid Park’ we have a similar image.”

TOM FORD

“The nude wrestling scene from the film Women in Love with Alan Bates and Oliver Reed, 1969. For some strange reason I accompanied my parents to this film in the theatre when I was eight years old. There is this scene where the two actors take off their clothes and wrestle naked in front of a fireplace. I was riveted and not really sure why, but I knew that I found this very interesting.”

Carine Roitfeld: Evening Dare

As we anxiously await the release of CR Men's Book tomorrow, let us amuse ourselves with the editorial “Evening Dare,” a daring take on menswear by Carine Roitfeld and Mario Testino published in Vogue Hommes International in 2007. Merci mille fois to the amazing Paul Kolyer for sharing his insights as well as the images.

Carine Roitfeld: Evening Dare
By Paul Kolyer

This flashback could be called “Roitfeld/Rewind” or “I Want To Be A Male Model Styled By Carine,” either way the team of Roitfeld/Testino created another fabulous editorial for Vogue Hommes Spring/Summer 2007. Just so happens that Taschen has released Mr. Testino's new book, SIR. This volume covers thirty years and will no doubt contain many images styled by CR.

Always ahead of her time, the "gender debate" in menswear was a non-issue for Carine Roitfeld. Her styling here borrows a dress, a bag, and a turban from the Prada line for women. The Prada evening bag is soft and so in style for men now. I love how she uses the single Tiffany diamond at the throat throughout. I wonder if t-shirt sales dropped after seeing this, if you've got the body, leave the tee at home!

All of Carine's fetishes (black, Le Smoking, nipples, waist, pubic hair) are on full display in “Evening Dare.” La Roitfeld really saw the future of menswear with her take on track pants, broaches, jackets over long tunics, and sequins for men — the Fendi sequined cardigan is so sexy for evening under Le Smoking.

The modern man has so many options now and with menswear seeing global double digit growth, Carine Roitfeld may want to use her design skills for a men's collection, sure to be a sell out. And she can style the ad campaign, bien sûr !

Carine Roitfeld: Plaisir Solitaire

Carine Roitfeld and Steven Klein collaborated to devise a provocative editorial for the Fall/Winter 2009 issue of Vogue Hommes International, a meat locker melee entitled "Plaisir Solitaire." I wonder what was on Carine's mind the day she thought of this très bizarre take on solitary pleasure… Perhaps the image below by Guy Bourdin had struck her fancy… Or maybe she was intrigued by editorials such as "The Big Chill" by Vogue (2004) or "Meatpacking" by L'Uomo Vogue (2005), inspired to intensify the dark fantasy and give it her own twist. Whatever her impetus, model Johnny Angel would fetch a nice price on any meat market even splattered with the blood of a hundred cows.

Carine Roitfeld's Last Vogue Hommes International

Perhaps it is due to the infrequency of publication but we certainly paid little respect to Carine Roitfeld's other former role for Condé Nast, editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International. The editorial torch passed to Olivier Lalanne and the Spring/Summer 2011 issue featuring James Franco is Carine's last. Terry Richardson shot the cover; inside are interviews with Riccardo Tisci, Ian McEwan, Juliette Gréco, and Jann Wenner among others. The issue appears on newsstands beginning March 18. We wish Monsieur Lalanne well in his new position, may I suggest himself for the next cover? Grrrr....

The latest issue of Vogue Hommes International features a flash of retro with supermodel Matt Norklun on the cover; kindly describing the contents of the magazine for us is the man amongst men Olivier Lalanne:
