Carine Roitfeld: 7 Cardinal Scenes

When I read the artist statement by Rebecca Dayan yesterday I was reminded of the piece “7 Cardinal Scenes” from the Vogue Hommes International Spring/Summer 2008 issue under the direction of Carine Roitfeld. Asked to submit an inspiring erotic image, the seven subjects happily complied. The editorial opens as follows: “It is a well-known fact that erotic images chanced upon whilst flicking through a magazine or visiting an exhibition sometimes become ingrained on their beholders’ minds and imaginations. In a ‘Vogue Homes International’ exclusive, seven stars reveal the powerful visions that stoked and fired their libidos.”

TERRY RICHARDSON

“I had this poster over my bed, in California, when I was ten years old. Every morning I’d open my eyes to this vision of Farrah Fawcett. Her hair, her smile, the colors on the cover pulled taut behind her. It looked like an ice cream ad. I also remember vividly that you could see her breasts through her t-shirt… this image made a lasting impression on me.”

DENNIS HOPPER

The Postman Always Rings Twice, the sex scene on the kitchen table, with Jack Nicholson, and Jessica Lange in beige stocking and garters. Unforgettable.”

ED RUSCHA

“I see the mechanical world as a source of eroticism. An example would certainly be a shiny piston in a cylinder. I go for this photograph taken by Bettina Hubby. The subject has all the mechanics necessary to be considered erotic. But the dilemma should be which do you attend to first?”

JEFF KOONS

“Looking at The Origin of the World, there’s a sense of birth and desire at the same time, an awareness of your own mortality. It is the alpha and the omega.”

HANIF KUREISHI

“Picasso’s Bathers is erotic not because of its overt sexual nature, but because of its abandonment, the amount of enjoyment he suggests the women are having, and, of course, because of the pleasure Picasso himself — and the viewer with him — is taking in looking at these women.”

GUS VAN SANT

“Hippolyte Flandrin’s Figure d’Etude is an early erotic image for me. I saw it in a book in high school. There have been many others like it and in ‘Paranoid Park’ we have a similar image.”

TOM FORD

“The nude wrestling scene from the film Women in Love with Alan Bates and Oliver Reed, 1969. For some strange reason I accompanied my parents to this film in the theatre when I was eight years old. There is this scene where the two actors take off their clothes and wrestle naked in front of a fireplace. I was riveted and not really sure why, but I knew that I found this very interesting.”

Carine Roitfeld: Cinema Against AIDS Gala

Carine Roitfeld: Cinema Against AIDS Gala
By Jessica Eritou

For the fourth year running, Carine Roitfeld curated yet another successful star-studded runway show at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes in partnership to benefit the 22nd amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala which raised nearly $30 million dollars.

The event included top models Gigi Hadid and Karolina Kurkova who were part of a show featuring nearly fifty looks. Among the designers featured were Tom Ford and Alexander Wang with shoes by Gianvito Rossi and jewels by Harry Winston. Since the dresses auctioned off were mostly sample sizes, the prizes were not aimed to be physically worn by each of the top bidders, measurements and sizes vary.

“What is amazing about the amfAR event in Cannes is that it is not only an incredible red carpet but people are very relaxed. It’s the South of France, it’s the Riviera, and there is a kind of freedom,” Carine Roitfeld told WWD in early May before the event. “The people who attend really enjoy themselves, and that’s why all the models want to be there.”

The Sixties theme drew inspiration from Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Jean Shrimpton, and Veruschka. “I didn’t want to have a show with only princess dresses,” Carine said to WWD. “I think a collection needs a bit of both — day and night.” Charli XCX also performed as part of the show. Roitfeld hoped to have nearly raised $5 million to match the previous year's amount for the fashion runway portion of the fundraiser.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld Directs Rock Roll Ride

These boots are made for.. Oooo la la… In her directorial debut, Rock Roll Ride for Stuart WeitzmanJulia Restoin Roitfeld proves to be a natural behind the camera, displaying cool confidence and sexy heat all at once. Julia cast Dylan Penn and Poppy Delevingne in her short film, and the playful and seductive pair model a parade of Stuart Weitzman boots that will haunt you for weeks. To set a sultry tone, la réalisatrice chose a remix of "Ride" by Lana del Rey with the Hamptons as background.

Regarding their collaboration, Stuart Weitzman explained, “When we started the creative process for our film series this season, we wanted to work with a female director whose artistic vision was aligned with our brand aesthetic. Julia’s body of work is impressive, and we knew she would capture the spirit of Stuart Weitzman through a unique vantage point.”

When asked about her initial experience as a director, JRR shared, “As a creative director, I think secretly I always wanted to direct a movie, and when Stuart Weitzman approached me to direct their fourth short film, I immediately said yes because I’m obsessed with shoes… I was so flattered, because James Franco did one of their films right before me so I’m following in the footsteps of real professionals. I was so stressed, because I felt like I needed to be at their level… I had no idea where to start, but I had an amazing production company who guided me, and helped me to show my ideas and helped me make it work. I wanted the girls to look like my fantasy look, and I wanted them to look very sensual, very sexy, very comfortable, very confident without looking vulgar, and that there’s a certain toughness in them, and also a fragility, and a certain sensuality… I like the multiple screen because it really reminds me of the layout of vintage Playboys. I use them as references and I love when it creates a mystery where you see a little bit of that scene mixed with a little bit of that and the close-up on the lips. I just love this whole aesthetic." In addition to finding inspiration for her film in the pages of Playboy, I would suggest that perhaps Julia has taken cues also from Brigitte Bardot in "Harley Davidson" and Franck Durand for Aurelie Bidermann.

For the Stuart Weitzman launch party at Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, Julia Restoin Roitfeld appeared in Mugler fresh off the runway with thigh-high boots by Stuart Weitzman, bien sûr. Among the many fabulous guests celebrating the launch were Carine Roitfeld, Daphne Groeneveld, Miranda Kerr, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Daisy Lowe, Cara Delevingne, Hannah Bronfman, Atlanta de Cadenet, Harley Viera-Newton, Leigh Lezark, Mario Sorrenti, David Koma, and Virginie Courtin-Clarins.

Carine Roitfeld: Intercontinental Chic

In a piece titled "Intercontinental Chic" for the August issue of Harper's Bazaar, "the world's most fashionable women, handpicked by the editors of Bazaar's international editions, share their secrets," and of course Carine Roitfeld tops the list of the très chic. In case you have not seen it, here are a few of Carine's personal preferences in culture, beauty, and fashion.

Carine Roitfeld on the essence of France's irreverent cool

CULTURE

Escape: The Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes is pure luxury.

Design: Any furniture by Knoll.

Film: E.T. — a classic!

Book: Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment.

Restaurant: Shang Palace at the Shangri-La Hotel, in Paris. It reminds me of the Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong.

Extras: I'm very fond of white tulips, particularly the way they continue to grow even after they've been cut. It's strange and beautiful.

BEAUTY

Routine: I'm quite unfaithful to skin-care products, but I do like La Prairie.

Eyes: Serge Lutens eyeliner comes in an old-fashioned lacquered box — you feel like a geisha when you use it.

FASHION

Philosophy: I'm always inspired by Helmut Newton's photographs of Yves Saint Laurent and by the work of Bob Richardson.

Key Pieces: For fall, I'm excited to wear Prada's long, thin scarves, as well as Givenchy's butterfly dress — butterflies are a big trend this season. And I love Tom Ford's long black skirt and jacket, to me this look is the new Le Smoking.

Shoes: I adore Miu Miu's translucent boots.

The Roitfelds At Cinema Against AIDS Gala

For the annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala at Cannes, this year Carine Roitfeld chose a silver dress by Saint Laurent while Julia appeared in a black gown by Givenchy. I love that Carine continues her Cannes tradition by wearing her beloved Alaïa lace ups, quelle femme.
