Carine Roitfeld: In The Stars

In her latest spread for Harper's Bazaar, "In the Stars," Carine Roitfeld interprets the twelve zodiacal signs by way of the season's fashion. Anthony Maule photographed the editorial while Stephen Gan provided creative direction. I applaud Carine's imaginative take on the zodiac, with amusing touches such as Saskia de Brauw giving herself the horns of the bull and Lara Stone as a mermaid complete with bubbles to create an underwater effect (as a Pisces, I approve!). Speaking of Lara Stone, she dominates the spread, appearing in eight of the thirteen images. What do you think of Carine's latest work, do you like her interpretation of your sign?

As for the complete list of models and attire for "In the Stars":

Carine Roitfeld: Rare Gems

Carine Roitfeld picks up the hippie chic thread running through the recent couture collections and ties it together in "Rare Gems" for fashion that is both flashback and futuristic. Shot by Michael Avedon for the December issue of Harper's Bazaar, "Rare Gems" stars Gigi Hadid and Gus Drake romping in Central Park in a colorful mixture of the season's best haute couture and jewelry selected by Carine from Saint Laurent, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Dior, Valentino, Maison Martin Margiela, Azzedine Alaïa, and Vionnet among others. Stephen Gan served as creative director for the whimsical editorial.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld Directs Rock Roll Ride

These boots are made for.. Oooo la la… In her directorial debut, Rock Roll Ride for Stuart WeitzmanJulia Restoin Roitfeld proves to be a natural behind the camera, displaying cool confidence and sexy heat all at once. Julia cast Dylan Penn and Poppy Delevingne in her short film, and the playful and seductive pair model a parade of Stuart Weitzman boots that will haunt you for weeks. To set a sultry tone, la réalisatrice chose a remix of "Ride" by Lana del Rey with the Hamptons as background.

Regarding their collaboration, Stuart Weitzman explained, “When we started the creative process for our film series this season, we wanted to work with a female director whose artistic vision was aligned with our brand aesthetic. Julia’s body of work is impressive, and we knew she would capture the spirit of Stuart Weitzman through a unique vantage point.”

When asked about her initial experience as a director, JRR shared, “As a creative director, I think secretly I always wanted to direct a movie, and when Stuart Weitzman approached me to direct their fourth short film, I immediately said yes because I’m obsessed with shoes… I was so flattered, because James Franco did one of their films right before me so I’m following in the footsteps of real professionals. I was so stressed, because I felt like I needed to be at their level… I had no idea where to start, but I had an amazing production company who guided me, and helped me to show my ideas and helped me make it work. I wanted the girls to look like my fantasy look, and I wanted them to look very sensual, very sexy, very comfortable, very confident without looking vulgar, and that there’s a certain toughness in them, and also a fragility, and a certain sensuality… I like the multiple screen because it really reminds me of the layout of vintage Playboys. I use them as references and I love when it creates a mystery where you see a little bit of that scene mixed with a little bit of that and the close-up on the lips. I just love this whole aesthetic." In addition to finding inspiration for her film in the pages of Playboy, I would suggest that perhaps Julia has taken cues also from Brigitte Bardot in "Harley Davidson" and Franck Durand for Aurelie Bidermann.

For the Stuart Weitzman launch party at Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, Julia Restoin Roitfeld appeared in Mugler fresh off the runway with thigh-high boots by Stuart Weitzman, bien sûr. Among the many fabulous guests celebrating the launch were Carine Roitfeld, Daphne Groeneveld, Miranda Kerr, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Daisy Lowe, Cara Delevingne, Hannah Bronfman, Atlanta de Cadenet, Harley Viera-Newton, Leigh Lezark, Mario Sorrenti, David Koma, and Virginie Courtin-Clarins.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld For Maniamania

You’re So Dark: Julia Restoin Roitfeld For Maniamania
By Sarra Salib

Potens necklace, Obscura cuff, Nocturn cocktail ring, Ephemera ring set, Talisman stacked ring, and Potens earrings — these are just a few of the gems that Julia Restoin Roitfeld so seductively modeled for Maniamania’s Obscura campaign.

Launched in 2009 by Australian art director Melanie Kramsler and stylist Tamila Purvis, Maniamania is a distinctive jewelry line that is the antithesis of delicacy and softness. The brand’s aesthetic is something akin to Warrior Princess mingling with Game of Thrones. One of the things I immediately thought of when I first saw the campaign was “Black Dahlia.” I ventured over to their site and did more exploring, and lo and behold, they had a Black Dahlia candle! It is aptly described as “a deep smokey glass candle in rich black wax and encased in a hand carved exterior of palm fronds and serpentine shapes.” After reviewing the other campaigns, labeling Maniamania as “mystical adornment for the modern times” could not be more precise.

The Obscura campaign, photographed by Bjorn Iooss, does not stray far from the aforementioned aesthetic. Alas, it is even more vampy, dark, mysterious, and dealing with the occult. One need only do a simple interpretation of the words "obscura," "nocturne," and "ephemera" to realize that the motifs for the campaign are the unknown, night, and all that is ephemeral. The pieces are extremely bold and geometric in nature, with tasseled cuff bracelets, statement prism necklaces, and plenty of not-so-simple rings and chains.

Clearly this is not a collection for naïve little girls. This jewelry is designed for a grown woman who knows herself and is ready to be empowered furthermore. Julia Restoin Roitfeld is the perfect candidate for this campaign because she does the bold, dark elegance so well. Moreover, all those years of modeling have taught her to master the smoldering, intense gaze — the “eyes that burn like cigarettes” look. Julia even joked about it on her Instagram saying “definitely my best '#dontmesswithme' face."

With Maniamania’s unique vision, jewelry is no longer about looking cute and simply completing the step of accessorizing; it’s about empowering your inner strong woman and truly making a statement. Brava Kramsler, Purvis, and Roitfeld!
