Vogue Paris Translation: Editorial, October 2009

Here is my attempt to translate Carine Roitfeld's editorial for the October issue of Vogue Paris from French to English. If native French speakers have suggestions to improve the translation, please do let me know.

On sait que la mode a pour vocation de créer de l'éphémère. De souffler sans cesse sur les braises du désir, de huiler la mécanique de l'envie et, pour ce faire, de brûler ce qu'elle a inventé six mois plus tôt dans un éternel cycle de création-destruction grisant mais implacable. Dans ce tourbillon du glamour, elles incarnent la stabilité, le rêve sans fin. Top models. Avec elles, sont nées au milieu des années 80 ces trois syllabes synonymes de beauté défiant le lois de la raison, de mensurations vertige, de charisme à faire pâlir les stars de Hollywood, de contrats en millions de dollars, de love-stories paparazzées au kilomètre. Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, Yasmin Le Bon, Kristen McMenamy... sont les grandes actrices de la ‹‹gloss épopée›› de la mode, des fantasmes pour des millions d'hommes, des idoles pour autant de petites filles. Elles trustent le haut de l'affiche et leur aura cloue le bec au temps qui passe. Quel est leur secret? Un mystère. Et c'est mieux ainsi. On ne sous-titre pas la légende.

We know that fashion aims to create the ephemeral. Constantly fanning the embers of desire, oiling the mechanics of lust, burning what she invented six months earlier in an eternal cycle of creation and destruction that is exhilarating but relentless. They monopolize the top of the bill and they grow silent as time passes. What is their secret? A mystery. And it's better this way. The legend is not subtitled.

Roitfeld And Konjic In Harper's Bazaar Russia

Fashionable couple Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Robert Konjic were featured in a recent issue of the Russian edition of Harper's Bazaar. Julia looks amazing in hot pink Balmain; Robert is classic as usual in his charcoal gray suit and tie against the crisp white shirt. This shot looks so natural I almost wonder if they knew HB was photographing them. If anyone can translate the titles and captions, I would be truly grateful for your help.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted the article "Restoin-Roitfeld And Konjic In Croatia" and asked if anyone could help with a translation? Krasi Genova generously offered to translate the text from Croatian to English for which we should all thank her. It's got lots of juicy bits about Julia and Robert that we might not have known otherwise. Hvala vam, Krasi!

Swedish model Robert Konjic brings his girlfriend Julia Restoin-Roitfeld to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik reminds me of New York—full of tourists everywhere, all kinds of people are hanging around and having fun, and here I am talking with beautiful Julia Restoin-Roitfeld (28), model and designer and well known as the face of Tom Ford’s perfume Black Orchid. This beautiful brunette woman is the daughter of Carine Roitfeld—editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris—and current girlfriend of Robert Konjic, a top Swedish model with Croatian roots. Robie, as he is known among his friends and in the fashion field, is the face behind the Nautica and Gucci campaigns.

Two Scorpios

"Before knowing Robie I had heard a lot about beautiful Croatia, but I never came here even for a holiday. I hope to find time to come for the summer soon," said Julia, who lives in New York after graduating Parsons. She first met Robert a year ago, in a restaurant called Il Buco but love sparked just a few months ago. “We met at a dinner party, I went there with my brother Vladimir. I liked him instantly but he was with another girl. Later on we met at a New Year’s Eve party in Mexico, and we felt instantly that there was something between us." He liked the beautiful blue eyes of Julia and her sense of humor and kindness but he admitted his feelings only after they came back to London. She invited him to New York and since then they are together as a couple. “So far we’ve been together in Tuscany, Paris, Moscow, Mexico," says Robert who has in his past a previous marriage and a relationship with Dita Von Teese. Like characters from a romantic American love story they are fully and madly in love. “Robert is a wonderful man. We are both Scorpios and most of the time I feel like I know him from before,” says Julia who after Dubrovnik will fly to Paris to visit her parents and prepare for the upcoming fashion season.

Here is Carine Roitfeld's editorial for the September 2009 issue of Vogue Paris in French and in English (albeit my powers of translation leave a bit to be desired). Also forgive me for accidentally cutting off the top of the image when scanning but I simply have not the time to retouch it. Curiously, Farrah Fawcett appears in the montage of photos but not the text...

Elles s'appellent Angela Merkel, Toni Morrison, Aung San Suu Kyi, Lydia Cacho Ribeiro ou encore Natalia Estemirova, journaliste et militante russe des droits de l'homme retrouvée assassinée en Tchétchénie au moment où nous bouclons ce numéro. Intellectuelles, présidentes à la tête de démocraties, opposantes à des dictatures au pouvoir, directrices d'ong, chercheurs, grands reporters, elles font de leur vie une course contre la montre pour dénoncer l'injustice, l'oppression, les atteintes à la liberté, pour défendre les plus faibles et donner au monde un visage humain. They are named Angela Merkel, Toni Morrison, Aung San Suu Kyi, Lydia Cacho Ribeiro or Natalia Estemirova, the Russian journalist and human rights activist found assassinated at Chechnya at the time we completed this issue. Celebrate Fashion Tonight

Tonight is the night when Vogue celebrates fashion around the world. In Paris, Carine Roitfeld and Karl Lagerfeld will anchor the Chanel store in what promises to be a unique shopping experience. Here is the news item from Vogue Paris regarding tonight as well as my attempt at translation.
